BC Ferry “Queen of Surrey” enroute to Sechelt – way too early…
Why too early you ask? Well – I had an ill-fated meeting in Richmond scheduled for 11:00 am. I phoned the person’s answering machine to move it to 11:30 am because of a sudden recording session project I had to prepare for clients.
Not checking his messages, the person I was meeting just went to his next meeting. And we missed each other…
Having nothing else pressing to do – I went to a driving range in Richmond (lemonade from lemons)
Now I’ve decided that I will go to Sechelt early and see if I can scrounge up the manager where I’m playing to go out and play a round of golf…(yes….I bought clubs…)
I’ve been going up to the driving range a bit and have improved my swing greatly in a short amount of time. I don’t want to get too excited about it though. If I remember correctly when my friends used to take me out years ago, I was better on my first game than I was on the subsequent games. I couldn’t deal with a game that I progressively became worse at, so I gave it up.
What’s transpired since that time is that every single person in the universe golfs. If I don’t play, I will be left behind a whole lot. As I posted earlier, I decided this had to be the year to take it up again. I got a ridiculously great deal on some clubs – and well – here I am – looking for windows of opportunity to hit balls around.
Well – a lot has happened since my last entry – no doubt…considering I was in Warsaw…that seems lifetimes ago.
The studio has been pretty busy with either myself and/or Ron Briggs (who also golfs) doing projects there – so that’s a wonderful thing.
I went to Indianapolis right after Warsaw (well after doing a one nighter in Whistler… how’s that for routing hm? …lol)
I decided to do a cd finally…interesting how life can get in the way of what you ‘really want to do’.
I’ve been feeling somewhat inspired **lately on getting something done. Time only moves in one direction…old line but oh so pertinent.
So what have I been up to that’s kept me from doing my blog? Hmmmm – well – whenever I do sit at the laptop lately, it’s mostly been to try to come up with lyrics – something that matters without being stupidly deep…kind of a hard cross to come up with… “Moon soon june” sometimes is all I can find in my rhyming schemes but I battle on diligently.
The problem with doing a cd after such a long period of time is that people get the idea that your ideas will be ‘stupendous’…well maybe not - maybe that’s just my fears again – will what I do be ‘good enough’?
I’ve decided that it will be ‘good enough’ and I’ve enlisted Lori Paul this year and we wrote some good songs together. Now I have approached my old cronie Jeff Neill (who also golfs) to co-write and co-produce this effort.
I love Jeff’s work. Also, the fact that he’s an Aries and I’m a Libra, make us very good partners in writing. He thinks he’s right and I agree with him – it’s a perfect relationship**.
In all seriousness…it works very well and Jeff has been incredibly encouraging with my ideas. He’s been very kind in what he has said. I’ve looked up to him since high school (literally – he was always 6’4” I swear) and having him work with me on this is an honour.
Okay – so back to ‘other stuff’.
Randy Bachman has been busy touring with Burton across the country. Everyone seems to assume that I’m doing that tour as well, but Burton always uses ‘his band’ in those situations. There was talk of the Bachman band doing Australia in November of this year (heck I even had dates posted for a while) but apparently that has been pushed back to February of 2007…we’ll see…nothing is ever etched in stone in this business.
(There’s a fly here that is pissing me off…my only saving grace with his landing on me and taking off before I can hit him, is knowing he won’t live very long anyway…) !@#$@#$!
There’s been ‘other things’ that have gone on in my life that are of a personal nature – and not for me to talk about here…let’s just say it’s been a trying time for a lot of people.
One thing I can fill you in on is my operation next week.
July 5th I’m getting a face overhaul. When I had braces in 2003, I was told that I would probably need surgery to fix what needed to be done …braces alone would not help. I was okay with that. Then I went to see the recommended surgeon… I didn’t realize that a second mortgage would have to take place for this idiot’s work…so I bowed out – they did what they could and took off my braces. I was done…and not very happy – the braces had cost a lot, and I certainly did not get the results I was hoping for by any stretch.
In 2003, I played Newfoundland with Randy…’Trooper’ was also on the bill and closed the show. Frankie Baker was Trooper’s new drummer….and (sorry Frankie…) he had a mouth that food would fear…lets just say, it wasn’t his best asset…okay – so enough said there…(Trooper were great that night – they deserved the headliner status that night for sure…)
Flash ahead to last year. We’re playing London Ontario with ZZ Top – also on the bill….’Trooper’ again. I see this drummer up on stage that looks like a freaking movie star. I walked up and said ‘Frankie – I’m so jealous – you got the operation I wanted… but I couldn't justify the price’
He then proceeded to tell me what he paid and I was floored…it was 1/3 what I had been quoted…!!! He went to Dr. Bill McDonald (who I’ve since found out in Vancouver’s best – I don’t know of anyone who’s gone to this other yo-yo…all I know is that he makes the same as Bill with 1/3 the work – goof!)
I got back to Vancouver and booked an appointment – but had to wait for months.
Ironically Bill McDonald knew me – he’s also a musician on the side…so we hit it off immediately.
I had to get my braces back on and was frankly a little put off with my orthodontist for not giving me another option when I was sent to a surgeon. I mean…it would’ve been done by now!!!
Finally after a few meetings with other orthodontists, I ended up back at my original guy, after he said he would reinstall my braces (a $1000.00 + job) for free because I was pissed about the surgeon issue…
So what is Billy Mac going to do to me?
Pull my lower jaw ahead – split my upper jaw in half (essentially) to widen my upper palette so that my smile will be fuller and also raise my upper teeth so that my gums will be hidden when I smile…
Why am I doing this…?
Well – on top of vanity and the distinct possibility that my mouth won't resemble Johnny Cash anymore ***(what the hell did that just mean?), there is a really good chance that if it’s left too long, I will lose my teeth due to my cross bite yada yada…
Okay – ferry ride is over (short one to Gibson’s Landing – remember “The Beachcombers” TV show???)

I will finish this in Sechelt…
Okay – I’m back – didn’t take too long did it?
Well – I’ve set up – I’ve checked into the hotel and I am now going up to the golf course again… maybe - if I can I will play 9 holes…there should be enough time – we’ll see if they’ll let me out there on my own…
Take care
